Adoption Information & Policies

Six kittens staring attentively at the prospect of treats.

We know how tempting it is to meet a cat or kitten and immediately want to take it home!  However, adoption is a life-time commitment (15-20 years) so AVA takes very seriously its obligation to the cats in its care. This includes finding the best fit for our cats and your family. We encourage prospective adopters to take the time to prepare for the adoption process.

What Should I do First?

Adoption Policies

  • All kittens under 12 months must be adopted with another kitten or go to a home with another young cat (learn more about our two-kitten policy).

  • AVA does not adopt out of province or out of country. Adopters should live within a one-hour radius of our locations in the Greater Toronto Horseshoe Area (GTHA).

Adoption Fees: What's Included?

Standard adoption fees for cats and kittens include vetting, spay/neuter, two dewormings, microchip, and initial vaccine at the time of adoption (FVRCP and rabies if age-appropriate). Additional fees may apply for cats who have had, or are due for, vaccine boosters prior to adoption. Testing for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Leukemia (FeLV) is is not included unless specifically indicated, as testing is not standard practice.

  • Adult over 1 year: $250 (with initial vaccine)

  • Adult over 1 year: $325 (with second/booster vaccine at $75)

  • Kitten or juvenile under 1 year: $275 (with initial vaccine)

  • Kitten or juvenile under 1 year: $350 (with booster vaccine at $75)

  • Seniors (10+ years) and special needs: $200

  • Special breeds: Starting at $250 – a $75 fee may be applied for special breeds who have had a booster administered prior to adoption.

Total fees will be confirmed by the AVA Adoption Coordinator.

Adoption Process

Think you found your new best friend? Please fill out an adoption application.

For applicants who meet the criteria outlined in the cat's adoption profile, an adoption coordinator will aim to contact the applicant within 48 hours to schedule an adoption screening. Due to the volume of applications received, a response may take up to one week. Note that not all applicants will be contacted. AVA is a 100% volunteer-run rescue so we appreciate your patience!

To ensure that the fit is right for everyone, adopters will meet cats either in person at one of our adoption centres or online during a virtual meet-and-greet for some kitties in our foster program.

Approved adopters are provided with adoption information, including an online adoption agreement, information regarding adoption fee payments, information/resources, and logistical information.
